Casa Ermelinda Freitas launches “Destemido” wine in honour of father

07/04/2025

On the day that Manuel João de Freitas Júnior would have turned 97, his daughter Leonor Freitas paid him a heartfelt tribute with the launch of Destemido, the new top-of-the-range wine from Casa Ermelinda Freitas. The ceremony took place this Saturday in Fernando Pó, Palmela, and was attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and dozens of personalities from culture, politics, economics and sport.
In an intimate reception, the busts of Manuel João and Mrs Ermelinda Freitas were unveiled and blessed. An emotional Leonor Freitas remembered her father as ‘a man with great vision’, whose memory deserved this symbolic justice. The event culminated with the presentation of Destemido, a rare wine, with only 2025 bottles, the price of which is expected to be around 700 euros.
The bottle, designed by artist Olga Noronha, is a true piece of art, presented in a wooden box with references to the Setúbal Peninsula and the bicycle on which the honoured man travelled the country at the age of 20. The wine, created by oenologist Jaime Quendera, is the result of a special selection: 70% Castelão from old vines, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 10% Syrah, aged in French and American oak.

More than a family tribute, Leonor Freitas believes that this launch is also an affirmation of the region: “It’s time we showed that wines are also made here that are on a par with – or even superior to – the great Châteaux of France. All we need is valorisation and marketing.
With this bold bet, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is raising the name of the Setúbal Peninsula to the top of the national and international wine scene.
